Sengkang is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Singapore. It is also a great place to visit for people who’d like to have a close-up view of the flora and fauna.

History of Sengkang

The town originated from an area that was once known as Kangkar. It was named after the port and fishing village that resided along Sungei Serangoon. The area was home to many rubber, pineapple, and pepper plantations, and it was left alone until 1994. After 1994, an urban design team started conceptualization for converting it into a new town. Sengkang was then carved into seven subzones that could house ninety-five thousand public and private housing units in the long term. The theme of Sengkang gradually became ‘Town of the Seafarer’ as conjured by local newspapers, to reflect its history as a fishing village.  Four neighbourhood areas of the new town - Rivervale, Compassvale, Anchorvale, and Fernvale - had two themes. One theme reflected the marine history of Kangkar while the other reflected the sprawling plantations that covered several parts of the area previously.

The first apartment blocks of the town were completed during 1997, and about 33,700 dwelling units were completed by August 2001. A steering committee formed in October 1999 looks after the necessary amenities in the new town of Sengkang. They coordinated with several organizations to open new precinct shops, childcare centres, and shopping malls.
