Tips to clean and disinfect swimming pools

It is a good thing if you are on the lookout for a few effective tips to clean and disinfect swimming pools at home as cleaning the pool by yourself would help save you some money. However, it takes a bit of work to clean your swimming pool at home. You will have to keep a check on several things and monitor the chemical levels three times a week. The effort and pain of cleaning are worth it when it comes to the safe use of the pool by everyone at your home.

We are here to discuss the most important steps to clean swimming pools at home by using the right supplies.

Steps to Clean and Disinfect Swimming Pools

Gather the Right Tools

You must gather everything you need before starting with the first steps of cleaning. One of the important tools you could have is a telescopic pole - it is used to connect different accessories while cleaning deep places. Make sure that you clean the telescopic pole and make it free of dirt and debris that could contaminate the pool.

Another essential tool you should have is a leaf skimmer. It is a small net you can attach to the telescopic pole to remove the leaves and other debris from the pool. You should make sure that you clean and dry the skimmers after every use so that it doesn’t get damaged.

Getting a good pool brush is the next important thing to keep in mind. Pool brushes help to clean the sides, ladders, and steps of the swimming pool easily. Make sure that you clean these brushes too periodically to make sure they stay clean.

Start by Skimming

The first step is to skim the surface of your swimming pool using the leaf skimmer. You should do this step daily to keep the pool neat and free from contamination. It is the easiest step among the rest to maintain the pool. To do this, attach the leaf skimmer to the telescopic pole and pull out the leaves and other foreign bodies you see at the surface of the water.

Brush the Sides of the Pool and the Pool Stairs

Get the pool brush and start to clean the sides, ladders, and stairs of the swimming pool. Attach the pool brush to the telescopic pole and run over the sides, ladder, and stairs of the pool using force to remove the grime. Give extra attention to areas with poor water movement such as the stairs as such areas could give more accumulated grime. Also, make sure to brush the pool at least once a week.

Start Vacuuming the Pool

Get a pool vacuum as it helps clean the floors of your pool effectively. Different types of pool vacuums are available online and in local stores, and you should select the vacuum depending on the type of your swimming pool and personal needs.

Automatic cleaners are of three types, but the most effective one would be the robotic pool cleaner. A robotic pool cleaner is a self-contained unit that will run around the bottom of the pool to collect dirt and debris. However, if you mind spending too much on a vacuum, you can choose a manual vacuum to clean your swimming pool. Manual vacuum cleaners come with instructions for setting up and use as well. Attach the head of the vacuum to the telescopic pole as per the instructions and lower its head to the pool slowly. Feed the hose into the pool after removing air from the hose and attaching it to the pump (a pump comes with most manual cleaners). Keep in mind that the hose will get damaged if you attach it to the pump without expelling the air.

You can now start vacuuming the swimming pool just as you would vacuum a carpet. Move the vacuum across the bottom of the swimming pool - move slowly or stay longer at areas that appear to be dirtier than other areas. Certain automatic pool cleaners won’t even need you to vacuum the pool. You must vacuum your pool at least once a week as a lot of dirt and dust can accumulate at the bottom of the pool, thereby leading to bacteria buildup. Using a pool vacuum will also help improve the pool water’s colour.

Manage the Chemical Levels

Several external factors like weather can affect the level of chemicals present in the pool water, which maintains the cleanliness of the pool. Therefore, test the pH levels of the pool water at least thrice a week to ensure safe use. You can get a pH tester from a local store to do this by checking the reviews of different brands available. The pH level of your pool’s water should be between 7.2 and 7.8. You should use a pH reducer or pH increaser if the pH level of the waterfalls outside this range. Apply those as necessary to bring the pH of the pool water into the safe range.

Check the Pool Filter

It is necessary for you to keep the area around the swimming pool filter clean and free from dirt and debris. Therefore, make sure that the area doesn’t have any grime or build-up. Take action by removing substances that might potentially clog the filter if you find any.

Add Chlorine Tablets

Buy sanitizing tablets online or from stores and add them to your swimming pool. Chlorine tablets dissolve slowly and kill the bacteria living in the pool water. Make sure that you add the tablets by following the instructions on their label. You can also consider adding pool shock to kill bacteria in the water released after sweat, urine, and hair.
